Before you go
Friendly and proud, with more than 40 communities; Swahili and English are official. "Jambo" or "Habari" opens most conversations, and handshakes are common. Most people are Christian; the coast has a large Muslim population.
Do
- Greet with a handshake and ask "Habari?"
- Dress modestly on the coast, especially in Lamu and Mombasa old town
- Ask before photographing people, including Maasai communities
- Use licensed safari operators and registered taxis
Don't
- Don't use plastic carrier bags — they are banned
- Don't photograph government buildings or police
- Don't walk alone at night in unfamiliar areas of Nairobi
