Before you go
Warm, community-centred culture where greetings matter: people greet elders first and ask after your family before business. English is the official language alongside Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani and others. Christianity and Islam are both widely practised; Sunday is a church day for many.
Do
- Greet people before asking a question or starting business
- Use your right hand to give, receive and eat
- Dress modestly in villages and religious places
- Ask before photographing people
Don't
- Don't hand things over with your left hand
- Don't photograph Flagstaff House, military sites or security staff
- Don't raise your voice or show anger in public — calm patience goes further
